Fabrizio, the Rainbow Pig

Fabrizio (or Fab, as his friends like to call him) belongs to a very rare and relatively unknown breed: the rainbow pig. He is very shy and doesn't normally like to be photographed, but I managed to catch him in a very good mood after seeing his first double rainbow in the sky. :)

Materials needed:

Acrylic DK or worsted yarn in the colours of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, violet - and a small amount of black for the nostrils.
3 mm crochet hook
a pair of 6 mm safety eyes
polyester stuffing
yarn needle

Abbreviations used:

sc = single crochet
inc = increase
dec = decrease
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
st = stitch
sts = stitches
BLO = in back loops only
FO = fasten off
mr = magic ring
CC = change colour

*This pattern uses American terminology.
**Gauge is not important for this project.

Head & Body

Start with red.
R1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
R2: (inc, 1) x 3 (9)
R3: sc across (BLO) (9)
R4: sc across (9)
R5: (inc, 2) x 3 (12) CC to orange
R6: (inc, 1) x 6 (18)
R7: (inc, 2) x 6 (24)
R8: (inc, 3) x 6 (30) CC to yellow
R9: (inc, 9) x 3 (33)
Attach safety eyes between R6 and 7 (after the first row of orange), about 6 sts apart.
R10-11: sc across CC to green
R12-14: sc across CC to blue
R15-17: sc across CC to purple
R18: sc across
R19: (dec, 9) x 3 (30)
R20: (dec, 3) x 6 (24) CC to violet
Start stuffing and continue stuffing as you go.
R21: (dec, 2) x 6 (18)
R22: (dec, 1) x 6 (12)
R23: dec x 6 (6)
Don't FO yet.

Tail

Continuing with violet, ch 21
Sl st in second ch from hook and in the following 19 chains.
Sl st in next st after the last decrease.
Close the gap and FO.
Twist the tail a couple of times to curl it.

Ears (make 2)

With red.
R1: 3 sc in magic ring, ch 1, turn (3)
R2: 2 sc in each of the 3 sts (6) Don't turn.
R3: 2 sc back into the magic ring (8)
Don't sl st. FO, leaving long tail for sewing.
Sew ears between R8 and 9 (where the colour changes from orange to yellow).
Roll the top of the ears slightly forward to make them look more like piggy ears.

Legs (make four)

With red.
R1: 6 sc in mr (6)
R2 & R3: sc across (6)
Sl st in next st.
FO leaving long end for sewing. Use the other end to stuff leg.
Sew the front legs on the yellow strip.
Sew the back legs on the blue strip. (See photo)

Finishing touches

With black, make two nostrils using French knots.

    2. I posted it this morning so everyone can see the photo. I'm going to make another for my daughter to her specific colour requirements! My son loved his and thanked me for making it several times. He has a book about a blue pig that turns rainbow colours after eating lots of vegetables so this was absolutely perfect.
